Unfortunately I can't make it easy for you and say it will cost $xx to edit your book--editing and proofreading doesn't work that way. The final price of any project depends on a multitude of factors including:
- condition and length of original submission
- content (complex or scientific content may require fact checking or research)
- deadline
- scale of edit (simple proofread, line edit, substantive edit, etc.)
- your expectations of the final product
Hiring an editor is not cheap, but it is valuable. Without it, your outstanding (but unpolished) manuscript could easily be overlooked or passed over. Often an agent or publisher will respond to a query by saying that the author's work shows promise but needs some editing or improvements before they'd be willing to take it on.
As a basic guideline, you can expect to pay an hourly rate of AU$65 (current as at 1 January 2012). Some projects are more suited to a per word rate or even a flat fee for the entire project. After I have full details of your requirements and expectations and have seen your draft, or at the very least a sample, I'll be able to provide a more accurate estimate.
Turnaround time will depend on the length and complexity of the work, and of course the quantity of projects ahead of you in the queue. For urgent projects, depending on my schedule, I may be able to speed up the process, however, this service does incur a premium fee to be negotiated at time of engagement.
